Yogawear

When I first started practicing yoga I wore my old tee shirts and baggy sweats to class. They felt loose and comfortable at first, but as I grew as a student and learned to do more poses, my clothes only seemed to get in the way. I'd move into downward dog and then wrestle to get my chin loose from the neck of my tee shirt. When I was in standing poses, my instructor kept asking to see my ankles which were hidden under my long baggy sweats. Whether you are practicing yoga at home or in a studio, your clothing should be comfortable and form-fitting without being too tight. The key word is: practical. Look for active wear that is soft, flexible and allows freedom of movement. You want clothing that won’t slip or bulge when you are lying on your mat. To test out tops, reach your arms up over your head or bend forward. Does the top still cover you? Can you easily move your arms? Yoga pants should be a comfortable length fully exposing your feet and ankles. Yoga is practiced in bare feet. If you are going to a studio, you will be asked to take off your shoes before entering the practice room. Your footwear can be a simple pair of sandals or slip-ons that you can step out of before class.

The bottom line: yoga isn't about fashion but it is about self-exploration. Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and gives you lots of movement so you can put your focus on the body and mind.
