The term "meditation" conjures up many images for different people - ranging from prayer, to a transcendental mystical experience, to a yogi seated cross-legged uttering ancient mantras. In truth, all of these descriptions depict forms of meditation, and at their core lies the simple act of quieting the mind (or to be fair, often not so simple act). The calmness of a still mind cultivates our natural wisdom and compassion. It allows us to listen to and awaken the heart, focus attention, and produce a lasting sense of peace and clarity. There really is no right or wrong way to meditate, so long as you are able to relax and reflect. This means that you can be seated, standing, or reclining, with your eyes opened or closed, listening to music or in complete silence - whatever feels comfortable and is most conducive to a deeply relaxed state. The most fundamental and traditional way to meditate is through observing the breath. By being present with the breath, one can clear the mind of thought and learn to relax and stay "centered" regardless of the environment. Some easy breathing exercises including counting the breath, controlling the breath, or even picturing the breath in colors or formations. Meditation offers a host of benefits, including a lowering of cholesterol, reduction in anxiety and stress, enhanced alertness and concentration, and with practice, an overall sense of vitality and contentedness. In addition, perhaps most significant of all, meditation allows one to become familiar with the Self, thus enabled the shifting of conditioned thought patterns and behaviors that can produce life-altering consequences.
